About

Driven by a curiosity for and fascination with life, multi-instrumentalist and music technologist Lau Breukhoven explores the intersection between live performance and creative technology, oftentimes under the moniker KROES.KROES is a project that covers a wide range of audiovisual works, ranging from diy electronics, instrument building, creative coding, installations and live performance, forever finding new ways to weave these fields together. They have also been active as a guitarist, bassist and synthplayer in several bands and solo projects, and are currently playing shows with Amsterdam-based bands Mundu Lawaai and Arc ValeCurrently they are also studying Music Technology at the Hoge School voor de kunsten Utrecht (HKU).

E-textile and Capacitive Touch Experiments (2025-Ongoing)
About a year ago I entered a "who's the weirdest" competition. Hosted in one of Amsterdam's underground clubs, bands and musical projects competed, all with the same goal in mind; to show the crowd that they were in fact the weirdest. To do so I decided I wanted to play a set without a single instrument that would be easily recognisable to the viewer. Dressed in a cloak that responded to my touch, I built and played instruments that responded to light, vibrations and touch.A few months later, I once again became interested in the principle of capacitive touch, and building instruments out of fabric. Together with two HKU Fashion Students we made a musical jacket that responded to what part of the jacket was either in movement or touched. The end goal of this still ongoing project is to give dancers the ability to generate sound with their own movements, allowing them to more narrowly integrate sound with their practice.
Rhythm of Flour (2025)
Rhythm of Flour is a performance-element and interactive sound installation. Made for and shown at the Museumnacht of The Hague at Quartair, the project took much inspiration from the history of Quartair as a former breadfactory.
It explores themes of rhythms born from repetition and slowly evolving change. The installation included a selfmade tabletop pickup that amplifies sounds being made on the glass plate above it, allowing me to use it during two live performances. The magnepans attached to the installation also played two pre-recorded compositions whenever there wasn't a performance.
You can listen to these compositions here:

Storybox (2026)
The storybox is a collaborative project commissioned by the public library of Amsterdam. They needed a box that would let them have people in the neighbourhood and professionals tell stories about different themes. Right now these are all around the subject of mental health and burnout.
To help them achieve this idea I’ve worked with some miniDFPlayers so that the audio files can be changed when needed, and only the controls that make sense are accessible to the user.
Up to four visitors can listen to these stories at the same time.

Dissapearance: Theremin Painting (2026)
Dissapearance is about the many things in our modern society that fade into the background. Inspired by our ways of disposing of garbage and electromagnetic fieldrecordings, it challenges us to spend more time with the hidden layers of our realities.Like a theremin, these paintings contain a homemade proximity sensor that outputs different values when approached or touched with varying pressure. These values then affect multiple parameters of a granular sampler, that has been initialised with electromagnetic fieldrecordings of trains.
The granular sampler i've written in c++
